Living Purposefully: Keep Moving Forward

The other day at church, the Pastor said something that really hit home with me. It was about moving forward. How even in the hard times, even in those dark moments, we must keep pushing forward. He showed us the image below. It's from the recent California wildfire that took the lives and homes of many. You can see a woman packing her car as she gets ready to leave before the flames engulf her. The image is terrifying, it literally looks like something out of the apocalypse.

She of course, couldn't take everything with her. She had to leave many things behind in order to save her life. Now here is the part that the Pastor said that really hit home--sometimes, not only do you have to leave the bad memories behind, but also the good memories in order to move forward.

How many times do we allow ourselves to get stuck, wishing we could have our old lives back? Many times we are forced to live out our "new normal," but yet we can't truly "live" because we keep thinking about the good memories from our past. Sometimes, as hard as it may be, we need to leave behind not only the bad, but also the good.

Now, that's not to say we must forget completely about the good times--that will never be possible. But just letting the grip go and accepting it for what it is, is what will allow you to move forward. As the saying goes, you take the cards you were dealt and just play the hell out of them.

If we keep looking back in the rear view mirror, we won't be able to appreciate all the blessings that are still ahead. That's what I've been trying to do everyday since my late husband's passing and my hope is that this will allow you to do the same. Just keep swimming.
